Since
I started practicing law I have been exposed to several
areas of the law:
|
 |
Family Law
|
|
The first being family law. This was a carryover
from my days as a paralegal. During that time I was
exposed to many people that wanted a divorce. I
would prepare the paperwork and that was that.
After I passed the bar and was admitted to practice law, I
was told by a "reliable source" that if I was to
learn family law I would never go hungry. I was told
this is where the money is.
During this exposure to family law, I learned a great many
lessons. This first being that if it is at all
possible to resolve a family law case without fighting; do
it. The long term benefits to society as a whole and
to the participants far outweighs any short term increase
in the bank account of the attorney.
Unfortunately, this lesson goes against the first rule of
family law, which is we are here to make money. My
experience with family law was short lived, less than one
year. After dealing with a great deal of attorneys
that believed in the first rule of family law, I decided
that I would never take another family law case, even if
it meant that it would take longer to make the real money.

Bankruptcy
|
|
This was another carry over from my days as a
paralegal. I had some exposure preparing paperwork
for clients and continued to do so after I passed the
bar. I have represented clients in Chapter 7
Bankruptcy cases where there is a complete liquidation of
their estate, and I have represented clients in Chapter 13
Bankruptcy cases where a portion of the debt is repaid
over time.
I find this work to be satisfying in that I am helping a
client through a very difficult time in their life.
They have had problems beyond their control that have
placed them into the position of filing Bankruptcy or they
have been careless with their credit and things went out
of control. In either case I have been able to help
people through those hard times and get back on track.

Criminal
Law
|
|
This is the area of law that creates the most satisfaction
for me. Here I am able to help people through a very
difficult time in their life. Most people I come
into contact with have never had any trouble with the law
before. They are really unsure about what the system
is going to do to them as a result of the crime they are
being charged with. As an attorney it is my job, not
only to defend a client in court, but to explain the
situation to a client in such a way that they understand
what can happen to them, and what will not happen to them,
as a result of the crime they are being charged with.

Personal
Injury
|
|
This area of
law deals with damage caused to a person and/or their
property. I have gained a lot of experience in this
area of law while I worked as a paralegal and as an
attorney.
As part of my experience, I prepared paperwork on personal
injury cases that resulted in a settlement to the client
of $1,200,000.00. Of course this case had
exceptional damages and there was more than sufficient
insurance to cover the damages to the client.
